There are a total of 21 formal competition
events and 4 demonstration events at the 2007 SOWSG:
I. Formal Competition Events:
1. Aquatics:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1968.
It is one of the earliest competitive events of the
Special Olympics, which includes freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke, and medley relay etc.
2. Athletic:
This event started from the 1st Special Olympics World
Summer Games in 1968, and is the most popular event
at Special Olympics Games. It includes sprint, middle-distance
race, marathon, high jump, shot put, long jump, relay
and pentathlon etc. Walking races and throwing events
are designed for athletes with lesser physical capabilities.
3. Basketball:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1968.
Basketball is one of the most popular group events.
It has been particularly favored by the Special Olympics
athletes since it stresses team cooperation. This competitive
event includes formal basketball matches and the Unified
Sports basketball matches etc.
4. Gymnastics:
This event was formally listed as a
competitive event at the Special Olympics World Summer
Games in 1972. Gymnastics is a sport that integrates
strength, flexibility and art. It includes Men's Artistic
Gymnastics, Women's Artistic Gymnastics and Women's
Rhythmic Gymnastics.
5. Bowling:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1975.
Bowling is a Special Olympics event that integrates
recreation, team cooperation and competition. The event
includes single, slope assisted, double, group and Unified
Sports competitions etc.
6. Soccer:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1979.
Soccer is one of most favorite sports events for Special
Olympics athletes. The event includes 11-player, outdoor
5-player, outdoor 7-player competitions and 7-player
Unified Sports competition.
7. Volleyball:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1983.
Volleyball is a comprehensive and popular competitive
event for sports training, recreation and competitive
sports. The formal competitions of this event includes
regular group competitions, Unified Sports, etc.
8. Softball:
This event was formally listed as a
competitive event at the Special Olympics World Summer
Games in 1983. Softball is an exciting team competition.
The event is a group competition.
9. Power
lifting:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1983.
Power lifting is a sport that challenges the physical
limits and displays an athlete’s individual strength.
Power lifting competitions at the Special Olympics Games
include squat, bench press, dead lift and combined events,
etc.
10. Equestrian:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1983.
Equestrian is a sport that requires high skills in communicating
with horses and to control the movement of horses. Formal
competitions of this event include dressage, competitions,
and two-player, three-player and four-player group relays,
etc.
11. Table
Tennis:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1987.
Table tennis is a popular and classic sport for both
physical exercise and competitions. The event includes
single, double, mixed double and Unified Sports double
competitions, etc.
12. Tennis:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1987.
Tennis is a comprehensive sport that integrates speed,
strength and endurance. The event includes single, double,
mixed double and individual skill competitions etc.
13. Roller
Skating:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1987.
Roller skating is a sport that integrates speed, balance
control and movement coordination. At the 2007 SOWSG,
there will be 100m, 300m, 500m, and 1000m speed skating,
as well as 2x and 4x relays, etc.
14. Cycling:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1987.
Cycling is a sport that integrates muscle training,
cardiovascular training, entertainment and recreation.
The event includes 500m and 1000m races, and 5 km to
40 km road cycling races.
15. Team
Handball:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1991.
Handball is a comprehensive sport that integrates speed,
flexibility, physical control capability and strength.
The event is a 7-player group competition.
16. Badminton:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1995.
Badminton is a comprehensive sport that integrates speed,
strength, patience and skill. The event includes single,
double, and mixed double competitions.
17. Golf:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1995.
Golf provides opportunities for Special Olympics athletes
to exercise, compete, and communicate with opponents
as well as residents in the same community. The event
includes individual skills, alternative hitting group,
and 9-ball and 18-ball individual hitting competitions.
18. Bocce:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1995.
Bocce is a sports event that requires a lot of skills.
It focuses on hand-eye coordination and the skillful
control of the movements of the upper limbs. This event
includes single, double, group, and single and group
Unified Sports competitions.
19. Sailing:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 1979.
Sailing is an emerging Special Olympics event that trains
strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance. This
event has five levels with different competitions, such
as unified competitions, independent competitions, and
coach on board, for different levels.
20. Kayaking:
This event was formally listed as a competitive event
at Special Olympics World Summer Games in 2003. Kayaking
is a rising competitive event that integrates physical
power, endurance and skill. The competition includes
single, double and unified doubles, etc.
21. Judo:
This is a rising Special Olympics event, which is a
two-player bare-handed competition that integrates agility,
flexibility, strength and skill. The competition is
classified into the men and women teams, and is conducted
at different levels based on athletes' weights, ages
and athletic abilities.
II. Demonstration Sports:
1. MATP:
This event is designed for athletes
with severe intellectual disabilities with the age of
8 or above who are incapable of participating in the
competitive events at the 2007 SOWSG. All participants
are Special Olympics athletes from Shanghai. Through
training functional activities, this event makes athletes
with severe intellectual disabilities improve their
skills and enhance their health, thus playing an incentive
role on them.
2. Cricket:
This event originated from Britain and flourishes in
Asia. Cricket is a comprehensive sporting event that
emphasizes on hand-eye coordination, dexterity of the
upper limbs, skill and strength. The event is a group
demonstrative competition.
3. Dragon-
Lion:
This is a demonstration event with Chinese characteristics.
Dragon-Lion stresses team cooperation. It helps strengthen
the body and is an event full of joys. The event is
a unified group competition.
4. Dagon
Boat:
This event originated from ancient Chinese folk activities.
Dragon Boat is a sporting event activity that integrates
outdoor sunshine, air and natural environment such as
rivers and lakes. The event has 250m and 500m unified
group races. |
