This
is a meeting attended by both intellectually disabled
youths and regular youths, its purpose being to conduct
stimulating and educational discussions in which both
youths and the public can obtain an in-depth understanding
of the world of people with intellectual disabilities,
and thus acquire an understanding of the spirits and
beliefs of Special Olympics.
The first Youth Summit was held during the 2001 World
Winter Games in Anchorage, Alaska, which was broadcasted
by American Nickel Entertainment Channel. The second
Global Youth Summit was held in Dublin, Ireland.
As a part of the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer
Games, the summit attracted global celebrities like
Nelson Mandela, Colin Farrell, and Maria Shriver. Through
the British MTV Channel, the performance at the summit
showed to the world the potential and confidence of
people with intellectual disabilities. The 2005 Global
Youth Summit in Nagano, Japan was attended by over 300
Japanese youths, together with the former U.S. president
Bill Clinton. Supported and aired by NHK, it moved many
