Law Enforcement
Torch Run

The
Law Enforcement Torch Run was started by the Police
Chief of Witchita in the State of Kansas, USA, the original
goal being to increase awareness of and raise funds
for Special Olympics. Under his leadership, the Torch
Run was launched with the active participations of his
subordinates. Later, the Torch Run was endorsed by the
International Association of Chiefs of Police. Other
law enforcement members, such as firefighters, forest
police officers and wardens, also began to actively
take part in the event. Currently, the Law Enforcement
Torch Run is carried out in 38 countries with a total
number of 85,000 law enforcement officials participating,
and has become an important part of Special Olympics.
By tradition, at each Special Olympics Games, the torch
that was ignited in Athens would be relayed to the Opening
Ceremony by the law enforcement members in the last
leg of the Torch Run.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for the 2007 Special Olympics
World Summer Games comprises two segments: one within
and one beyond China’s borders. After the torch carrying
the “Flame of Hope” is ignited in Athens, Greece, it
will spread the spirit of Special Olympics and the faith
of supporting people with intellectual disabilities
to all continents on the planet. When the torch enters
China, the extremely important Chinese segment of the
Torch Run begins. The torch will be carried in relay
through more than ten cities in China, conveying the
message and spirit of Special Olympics to Chinese people
in the traditional way unique to Special Olympics. In
the meantime, the grand torch run will be used to celebrate
the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held
in China, to promote China’s humanistic spirit, and
to make the spirit of Special Olympics reach deep into
the hearts of China’s 1.3 billion people. As guardians
of the flame of Special Olympics, law enforcement members
from all over the world will escort the torch throughout
its trip in China, and relay the “Flame of Hope” to
the site of the Opening Ceremony of the 2007 Special
Olympics World Summer Games. |
