On October 2, 2007, the Organizing Committee for the 2007 Shanghai Special Olympics World Summer Games will, along with Special Olympics International, co-host the “Global Summit for Health and Welfare of People with Intellectual Disabilities” (to be called “the Summit” below). The Summit is designed to discuss opportunities and challenges faced by people with intellectual disabilities in their integration with the society, to exchange the latest research results regarding their current situation and development, and policies and methods to promote undertakings for them, and to give them a chance to let the world see them, so as to force the society as a whole to pay attention to their needs and create opportunities for them. The Summit will have 1000 attendees, including government officials, scholars, researchers, celebrities, research program managers, students, international Special Olympics athletes and their families etc.
