The schedule for Special Olympics Games is not as tight as those for other athletic games. Upon the completion of matches, athletes would not leave immediately. According to the tradition of previous Special Olympics Games and in order to demonstrate the humane care from the 2007 Special Olympics Games, therefore, 2007 Special Olympics Town will be set up during the Games. Through diverse and popular entertainment activities in Special Olympics Town, athletes and coaches can enjoy more happiness and relaxation outside of contests.
Special Olympics Town will be set up in Jiangwan Gymnasium. During the Games (from October 3rd through 9th, 2007), it will be open to athletes and coaches from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm daily (tentatively). Families of athletes and their accompanying volunteers are not allowed to participate in related games and entertainment activities.
Special Olympics Town will offer a variety of games and activities of entertainment and fun, including exhibition of folk arts like blow painting, straw braided products, dough figurines, paper-cuts, making of Chinese knots, calligraphy, and Playing diabolo (bell-pulling), etc.; games popular in Shanghai alleys like shuttlecock kicking, marble picking, Hoop throwing, sandbag throwing, nose-pinning on face, bead threading, and yoyo throwing, etc.; regular sporting games like hoop shooting, bowling, darts, and vision comparison, etc.; intelligence games like paper folding and model making; and even recreational entertainments like electronic amusement equipment, DISCO dancing, and DVD movies. Additionally, featured lounges will be set up to provide drinks like coffee, Chinese tea, and soda, as well as various snacks for athletes and guests from different countries.
All kinds of delicate prizes will be given out according to related game rules during all activities. The prizes will be mainly small crafts with Shanghai or Chinese features.
