Design
Concept
The logo is shaped like an eye with the figures
of two athletes jumping in the pupil, resembling
a blooming white magnolia, Shanghai’s city flower.
This design breaks through the stereotype which
expresses an idea by deforming shapes of letters.
Using freehand brushwork as in traditional Chinese
painting, it conveys a strong, appealing message.
Connotations
First, it is an expression of praying for hope.
When children with intellectual disabilities
come to the world and open their eyes, they
expect to see their mother’s kind eyes. As they
grow up, they expect encouragement and help
in people’s eyes to overcome difficulties and
setbacks. When they enter society, they expect
expressions of equality, acceptance and tolerance.
Second, it is an expression of concern and
love. Every person living in the world should
spare no effort to give people with intellectual
disabilities care, concern and love. It is our
responsibility to treat them equitably and to
help and encourage them to integrate into society.
A small expression of concern and love in our
eyes can be a strong motivation to support their
self-esteem and self-improvement.
Third, it is an expression of awareness. The
2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games will
be held in Shanghai, China. It will not only
be a magnificent gala for people with intellectual
disabilities, but also a gala that demonstrates
human civilization. The whole world will be
focusing on Shanghai, on the 2007 World Games,
which is a lofty cause, and on China, which
is developing into an even more civilized culture,
where humanism, humanity, humaneness and humanitarianism
are highly respected.
